What a mediator does
A mediator is a neutral third party who facilitates conversation, clarifies options, and helps write down agreements. They do not decide for you and do not represent either spouse.
When mediation works best
Mediation works when both spouses can share information honestly. It may not be appropriate where there is domestic violence or a serious power imbalance.
Should you still have a lawyer?
Many people use a consulting attorney to review the mediated agreement before signing. It’s a modest cost that protects your rights.
